![]() Especially later on in the story, you’ll likely recognize the same undead faces you blew off way back at the police station. ![]() ![]() They’re juicier than ever (I’d venture a guess the designers were heavily inspired by the Tarman from Return of the Living Dead) and I love the way they lurch around and react when you blow off very specific chunks of their heads and hands courtesy of the satisfyingly detailed dismemberment system.Ĭapcom does noticeably reuse the same handful of zombie models, though. “Now, instead of pixelated characters running from pre-rendered background to pre-rendered background, Resident Evil 2 is a fully 3D, over-the-shoulder affair with atmospheric lighting effects, impressive facial animations, and the best-looking zombies I’ve ever seen in a game. That’s because instead of the usual remastering treatment where we see upgraded resolution and textures hung over an old game’s skeleton, here Capcom started from scratch and remade the whole thing using the RE Engine, which is the tech that powered Resident Evil 7. If a similar amount of time has passed for you, or if you’ve never played it, it might not be apparent what an enormous improvement this remake is unless you look at it side-by-side with the original. I hadn’t played the original Resident Evil 2 since its release 20 years ago and only remembered the broadest of strokes: I knew it largely took place in a police station, the Lickers were introduced, and the giant spiders in the sewers were a nightmare. The two playable characters’ stories aren’t as different as I’d hoped, but I enjoyed nearly every gory minute of my return to Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield’s shoes. Now, in 2019, Capcom has given me a new experience I’ll remember for a long time: this ground-up remake of Resident Evil 2 is a very fun, very creepy adventure thanks to its completely new and modern graphics, controls, and some smart quality-of-life improvements. ![]() (Oh, 1998 Daemon, you had so much to learn!) Another great gaming recollection of mine is playing the 2002 remake of the first Resident Evil on GameCube with its beautifully updated visuals, completely new areas to explore, and terrifying new enemies. I have fond memories of playing the original Resident Evil 2 in my dorm room at the University of Kansas back in 1998 and thinking the CGI cutscenes looked incredibly realistic. ![]()

So listening to community feedback and encouraging community feedback is a part of our process, a part of our business model, a part of our philosophy. “We’re here to shepherd the community and be the guys that deliver the fun. “We don’t want to stop players from having fun or tell players how they should have fun,” Smektala explains. One way that Dying Light 2’s post-launch content is changing is to give players more impetus to stay in Villedor (rather than returning to the more toy-filled sandbox of Harran), is taking advantage of how Stay Human looks on current-gen hardware both on console and PC. How can Techland convince you to stay in its city for longer? Because for us we understand when the game is released it’s in the wild and not ours anymore, it’s not just 300 people working on the game owning it, it’s 5 million owners.” “ flexible and for us it’s a crucial part of how we think about post-launch: being very aware of community requests and listening very closely to what gamers expect. “We’ll do a lot of different stuff to try and see how the community responds to and what excites the community most, then on the second part of the journey – between the bits we already have in mind – we will release more content based on requests from the community. “Our plan for the initial phase, which for us lasts for between 12 and 18 months, is quite detailed, and we have a lot of things that we can’t talk about yet, but will happen over the next year to year and a half. ![]() “We are all set up to deliver and we have a plan and quite clear picture of where we want Dying Light 2 to be in 2027 – however crazy that may sound,” Smektala says. There's a long future ahead for Dying Light 2. It’s gotten a lot of new content, tweaks, improvements so in a way it’s more mature than the second one right now because we’re still adding to it.”Īnd despite Dying Light 2’s first story DLC being delayed from summer to fall, the first additions are already being made, just not always in the order Techland originally intended.Īs many infected as there are shambling the streets of Villedor, there are a lot of bugs too, and Techland took to posting checkpoint lists of specific issues it was working on and what was left in the pipeline as it tried to shore up Stay Human’s inconsistent performance and, unfortunately, hiccupy presentation.īut alongside that, different teams were still working on adding new enemy types and new platforming challenges to expand the game’s parkour offering, as well as shuffling the roadmap in response to community feedback. “Also consider that the first game also changed over those years. It’s an investment and I think people are waiting to see what we do with the game, how it will start growing. I think what stops people from making this move is, like every new game, it’s expensive, you need to find those $70 or £60 to get a new game. “Definitely we’d like to move everyone to Dying Light 2: Stay Human at some point. So in a way Dying Light 2: Stay Human had it more difficult because it had to meet those expectations. ![]() “I think the first Dying Light had the advantage of being a fresh thing that happened and no one expected it to happen in the way it did. ![]() “I don’t think there’s an easy answer to that,” says Tymon Smektala, Dying Light 2 lead designer, when I ask him why he thinks about the same number of people are playing Dying Light as Dying Light 2 on Steam at the moment. Techland's latest faced some tough competition at launch. Watch on YouTube Dying Light 2 launched well, and has only gotten stronger since.īut where the original was spritely and free, skipping right to the forefront gaming’s big franchises while major publishers were looking the other way, Dying Light 2: Stay Human was being asked to repeat the feat while balancing buckets of water over its shoulders, riding a unicycle, and in front of a live studio audience.īy 2022, Dying Light had received seven years of gameplay improvements, quality of life tweaks, a massively well received DLC expansion and even a whole new dark fantasy-themed game mode, so not only was Dying Light 2 carrying the weight of a much larger audience’s excitement, it was under pressure to deliver something that was just as polished, varied and complete straight away – all with the spectres of Horizon: Forbidden West and Elden Ring looming over gamer’s wallets in the same month. ![]() ![]() Author Peter Doggett wrote that "each phrase too quickly to be understood at first hearing, the sound as important as the meaning". The lyrics were inspired by his relationship with Ono, and were delivered quickly, as in the Berry song. Lennon further incorporated the phrase "shoot me" from his unfinished and unreleased January 1969 song, " Watching Rainbows". ![]() Based on the 1956 single " You Can't Catch Me" by American guitarist Chuck Berry, the composition began as an up-tempo blues number, only slightly altering Berry's original lyric of "Here come a flattop / He was movin' up with me" to "Here come ol' flattop / He come groovin' up slowly". In July 1969, during sessions for the Beatles' album Abbey Road, Lennon used the phrase "come together" from the Leary campaign song to compose a new song for the album. Lennon promised to finish and record the song, and Leary later recalled Lennon giving him a tape of the piece, but the two did not interact again. Leary intended to run for Governor of California in the following year's election and asked Lennon to write him a campaign song based on the campaign's slogan, "Come Together – Join the Party!" The resulting chant was only a line long: "Come together and join the party". ![]() In May, during the Montreal portion of the bed-in, counterculture figures from across North America visited Lennon, including American psychologist Timothy Leary, an early advocate of LSD, whom Lennon admired.
